“Let us run with determination the race that lies before us. Let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus on whom our faith depends.” – Hebrews 12:1, 2

Both Teams got off to a good start to the season after the Hurricane layoff. Varsity Boys finished 9th in a very good field and the Varsity Girls were 6th. Efrain Lira was 6th against some of the best 6A competition in the State while Mariela Guerrero was 10th and Emika Sorenson was 14th in the girls race. The JV Boys were 10th and JV Girls 6th. Our Freshman Boys did not have a full team but competed well. Eian Bracken was the top finisher in 22nd place.

The Willis Cross Country Team hosted 18 teams at the WildKat Invitational on Thursday and had great results!

The Varsity Boys finished 2nd to top rated College Park. Junior Efrain Lira finished 6th with a time of 16:18 over the grueling 5 kilometer course. Also placing in the top 20 out of 100 runners was Junior Jaime Vega placing 15th with a time of 17:12 and Sophomore Carlos Barcenas in 17th with a time of 17:24. It was a good improvement for the team!
In the Varsity Girls the LadyKats finished 7th out of 12 teams. Junior Emika Sorenson led the team  by placing 12th against some great competition. Junior Mariela Guerrero was close behind in 19th place.
In the JV competition D'Angelo Rojero was top finisher for the WildKats placing 16th followed by Sophomore Shane Abernathy in 20th. The team placed 5th. In the Girls race Freshman Julianna Garcia placed 61st out of 206 girls to lead the team to a 10th place finish!
In the Freshman Boys race Braden Kurtz finished 20th showing good improvement and a strong finish.

Race day diet - On the morning of the big day, have a light breakfast; a bagel or poptart, fruit, and some water is ideal. Bananas and berries are great! A yogurt with fruit and granola is good. Pancakes, toast, French toast are good in small amounts. Stay away from greasy, fried foods.  Water, deluded Gatorade, low sugar juices are good to wash it down with.

Before the race, staying hydrated is most important. Drink some fluids every 20 minutes. Try to get about 25 grams of carbohydrates 60 minutes before you run and stick with a sports drink or easily digested foods like sports bars or gels, bananas. Eat something you have tried before. Try to keep things as normal as possible. Everyone's stomach reacts differently to different foods, and a race is not the best time to discover that a new sports bar doesn't agree with you.
